The Future Startup Dossier: Sheba

Sheba is a Dhaka-based on-demand service marketplace that connects households and businesses with the service provider companies and individuals under one platform so that users can compare and choose their ideal solution without going through the hassle of searching multiple websites or physical locations.

Sheba started its journey in 2015. It is one of the five startups that graduated from GP Accelerator’s first batch. Initially, the company started piloting its service in the Mirpur DOHS area for a couple of months.

In July 2016, Sheba was launched officially and now it provides services in two major cities of Bangladesh: Dhaka and Chittagong.

In an interview with The Daily Star Adnan Imtiaz, the founder and CEO of Sheba said that the idea of Sheba came to his mind from his personal frustration due to lack of professionalism in the service industry, particularly in the case of everyday household services of Bangladesh.

The two major challenges faced by both the customers and the service providers are lack of information of service providers and insufficiency of reliable sources to verify the credibility of the service providers.

Sheba makes the process of finding the top quality and reliable service professionals simpler. It claims to thoroughly verify the service providers who provide household services through this platform.

Customers can place orders through phone calls or website or the app Sheba from 8.00 AM to 10.00 PM seven days a week. Customer service assists customers in finding the most suitable service provider until the task is delivered based on his/her requirement. Customers can pay through different payment methods including online payment, POS, MFS, and Cash on Delivery. In August 2016 Sheba launched the EMI feature.

In September 2017, Sheba raised about $ 1M in a seed funding round from a host of local investors and international VCs. In December 2017, Sheba was awarded the National Information and Communication Technology Award.

In March 2021, Sheba received an investment along with six other startups from Startup Bangladesh, the venture capital vehicle backed by the Bangladesh Government.

In December 2019, Sheba Introduced MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) focused ERP product sManager, an app-based Point of Sale business solution for MSME, which allows a user to track sales, cash flow, inventory management/warehousing, order processing, account management and beyond.

In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic Sheba launched “Sheba Groceries”, a hyper-local grocery supply service.

Sheba claims to have served more than 100k orders so far. At present, more than 15000 service providers are working on the Sheba platform.

Along with redefining and simplifying the process of availing services in Bangladesh, Sheba aims to bring positive social impacts by creating entrepreneurs and increasing employment opportunities in Bangladesh.
