These Are The Reasons Why Young People Don’t Start A Business In Bangladesh

Over the last couple of years, I have noticed huge excitement around the idea startup and entrepreneurship among the young Bangladeshi educated community. A good number of events, workshops, boot camps, seed funding, pitching events and business plan competitions are also taking place all over the country with majority being taken place in Dhaka. With increasing youth unemployment every year, this is a very good sign and a very good reason to be hopeful.

However, question remains how effective these events and activities are in inspiring young people to really get out of societal convention and start something. We will have to wait for few more years to see the impact of what we are doing today. However, for now the result is apparent, there are lots of posers but very few people who ultimately bell the cat and get out and start something. The number of people who are starting businesses is still very slim.

Being a part of the eco-system I wanted to understand what are the reasons that holding our young people back from starting a business, who are these people, challenges they face when they decide to start a company, and why these people want to be an entrepreneur. So I took the obvious approach, conducting a small research among young people who have at least one university degree. I surveyed and talked to around 1270 people and tried to understand what they think.

This is maybe too early to come to any conclusion and given the fact that sample size is relatively small, this is not something that can tell us the exact truth but this can give us perspective into what we should do and should not and what could have been done better and more.

This infographic is part of the findings of that research. Few more articles and infographics along with the findings of the research will be published eventually here on Future Startup.
