Robi’s New CEO Mahtab Uddin Ahmed: A Couple Facts You Need To Know

Robi-Axiata Limited has appointed Mahtab Uddin Ahmed as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in Bangladesh, said a press release on Monday [Which is already an old news!]. 

With the change, Mr. Ahmed takes the place of Supun Weerasinghe who held the position since January 2014. He is taking over charges as the first ever local Robi CEO.

Mr. Ahmed has a decorated career. He has reputation for his deep business acumen with a deep understanding of the business operation, finance, and strategy and is known as a down to earth person.

Mr. Ahmed joined Robi as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in 2010 and worked in that position for 4 years. Later, he was promoted to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) from April 2014 where he remained until March 2016.

Mr. Ahmed did his Bachelor and Masters of Commerce both from the University of Dhaka. He is an accounting major. He is also an alumnus of the Harvard Business School (AMP 190), a Fellow member (FCMA) of Institute of Cost and Management Accountant of Bangladesh (ICMAB), and CGMA of Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA, UK).

Before joining Robi, Ahmed was in Unilever where he spent 17 years of his career. Among several other operating and finance leadership position, Ahmed held the post of Finance Director in different operating companies like Unilever Pakistan, Unilever Arabia, and Unilever Bangladesh.

With the succession, Mr. Ahmed is tasked with strengthening Robi’s position in the market with the pending merger of Bharti Airtel and providing strong leadership and vision for the merged entity to excel in an already complex market where telecom business is gradually shifting towards a data era.
