Weekender: Readings, Ideas, Events And More

Everything in life takes time. ‘Be patient with everything unresolved in your heart’ urged Rainer Maria Rilke and ‘do it bird by bird’ suggests Anne Lamott. But we dare to disagree. Our built in tendency is to get things now. With problem we demand instant fix, with need we seek instant gratification and with goal we require instant fulfillment.

At this moment of the year we should take time and contemplate and come to an agreement with ourselves that life is a long game of patience and our ability to endure is what makes us human.

Person: Meet the 2015 class of TED Fellows

“These 21 game-changing thinkers represent 15 countries—including, for the first time in our program, Vietnam, Romania and Tunisia. They work across disciplines, at the forefront of their fields. They include a South African physicist using lasers to target HIV and cancer; a German/Moroccan paleontologist who discovered the first semi-aquatic dinosaur, the spinosaurus; a Vietnamese entrepreneur who is helping rice farmers use biowaste to earn a living growing mushrooms; and many more.”

Reading: Inside DuckDuckGo, Google's Tiniest, Fiercest Competitor

“When Gabriel Weinberg launched a search engine in 2008, plenty of people thought he was insane. How could DuckDuckGo, a tiny, Philadelphia-based startup, go up against Google? One way, he wagered, was by respecting user privacy. Six years later, we're living in the post-Snowden era, and the idea doesn't seem so crazy.
In fact, DuckDuckGo is exploding.”

Company Culture: Transparent Pricing-What your money is used for when you buy a buffer subscription

“One of the things we’re incredibly excited about at Buffer is transparency. A big part of that is because being transparent simply feels like the right thing to do, intuitively. That by itself, seems reason enough to pursue it.”

Event: The Mad Koffee Show

“Unusual talents, shared by underrated young people. From technology to arts, we cover it all.”
